We recently acquired a used AP9210j and after reseting to factory defaults, we were able to login using default apc userid. I attempted to configure the IP network using the menus (the device has v1.0 of the firmware), and after setting IP and subnet, pressed 8 (?) to accept the changes. A message appeared stating that I'd have to go to Advanced->Reset PDU to put my changes into effect. I did so but when it came back the network changes were gone.
So my questions are:
1. Did I do anything incorrectly?
2. The manual I am looking at refers to v1.1 where the menus are very different, so is there an old manual somewhere that deals with v1.0, or,
3. Is it possible to upgrade the firmware to v1.1. Given the age of the device I'd suspect not, but might as well ask.
Thanks...
Neale

It is also important to note that these units (and other products from that generation as well as some newer ones) have a serious security vulnerability which allows anyone who can access the unit, either by the serial port or via the network, to obtain complete control of the device and change the configuration and/or power off the attached equipment. I can't quickly find a reference to this on the APC web site (the CERT advisory links to a defunct page), but if you search for CVE-2004-0311 you should be able to find it.
There may well be other vulnerabilities in that card, but since it was discontinued long before the oher problems were found, I don't think it was evaluated to see if it was vulnerable. Newer cards have had firmware fixes for vulnerabilities in the TCP/IP stack and the SNMP server code as well as other things.

i have not dealt with this specific model before but i know the models like it. i feel like the PDU wanted you to reboot the interface for the changes to take affect and maybe you had reset it to defaults instead so it wiped the settings.
is the manual you are looking at online? attached to this post is the user's guide I found and what i am referring to. page 22 of the PDF is what I am looking at for what you did and you should have entered the IP settings and then went ahead and pressed accept changes (option 5) then pressed Esc until you got to the main menu and pressed log out. then the device should automatically reboot and apply the settings during that reboot.
i will have to see about the firmware. i know the latest version is 1.1.2 but i cant find the actual file right this second.
EDIT - I just found out that these really old units required a chip replacement to update firmware which we don't of course offer because its over 10 years old already.

Thanks, but that manual is for v1.1. This firmware tells you explicitly to use the reset PDU controller function. If I logoff after accepting the IP changes and then logon I get the following logon msg:
Network Settings Take Effect Only After Advanced > Reinitialize PDU Controller
Thanks for the info regarding the chip update.
I tried attaching this as a file but I got a page full of java errors when I pressed post message:

i cleaned up some of the replies. i figured for something like this there would not be a major change between 1.0 and v1.1 to be honest. i am not sure on this one. i would have just did the reboot like you did. i wonder if you could try specifically disabling BOOTP?

Bingo! It makes sense now that I think about it. Thanks very much for the assistance, especially on such a "retro" bit of equipment.

Terry- Thanks, that's an important consideration. I don't think I'd ever
open such a device to the outside world. We'll use only on the internal LAN
and passwords and odd port numbers should be enough protection there.
I found it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The user name for web access on the AP2910 is apcuser
I spotted that listed as the username on another model and tried
it and it works.
It would still be helpful if somebody had the v1.0 user guide. I think
I've figured most of it out but there are still some obscure settings
that are not intuitive.
Thanks.

Don't mean to thread jack but I have a similar problem.
Used AP9210 with the Rev 1.0 software. The menu map looks exactly
like what's described above.
I've gotten past setting the IP address by logging in through the serial port.
I can access the unit by the IP I've assigned and the login screen comes up
asking for a user name and password.
That's where the problem is. No combination of user name and password works.
apc/apc doesn't work.
The serial port only asks for the password. It doesn't ask for a user name like
the web access does. I can even change the password and the new one works
with the serial port.
Do you have any idea what it wants for user name through the web interface?
As neale stated. the manual in your link is for version 1.1 which is very different
from 1.0. I've not been able to find a copy of the 1.0 manual any place online.
Neale, were you able to login through the web access?
Thanks.
jim b
