Smart-UPS 3000 RM Hotswapping Battery

This was originally posted on APC forums on 10/3/2011

Hey there,

Our Smart-UPS 3000 RM is failing on its self-battery-check since a few days and I ordered already a replacement battery.
Now I want to hotswap the battery but can't find anywhere really which steps to take to do so without powering off the connected devices. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Regards,
J.

Yes It Is Safe To Just Pull The Connector (You May See The Red Replace Battery Light Blink)

(The Ups Only Uses Its Battery If The Power Is Lost Or Charging)

That would be awesome! I have the DLA3000RMI2U model here, if that is the # you mean.
Looking forward to the instructions, thanks!

If you can get me the exact model #, I can give you exact instructions but the batteries are definitely hot swappable. Usually there is a anderson type connector that you just need to connect but knowing the exact UPS model # will help confirm that.

Steps:

Remove the front bezel
Pull the battery connector string ( the connector should come out )
Then loosen the battery tray screws ( they should have arrows pointing to them )
THE BATTERY TRAY IS HEAVY
Slide Out The Battery Tray And Properly Dispose of it
Then Slide the New battery tray into the ups
Reconnect the Anderson connector
Replace the screws
Put the bezel on
Allow the unit to charge for 24 hours
Then hold the test button ( then the replace battery will clear )

I am going to be replacing my current UPS with a new APC model.  My current UPS is a Smart-UPS 3000RM XL that has one extra battery pack attached to it.  Can I unplug the extra pack while the main unit is powered on and plugged in?

Hi,

You can disconnect the battery while the unit is live.

Thank you.  So just to confirm, I can unplug both the external battery packs while they are live as well as the internal batteries?

Hi AJ,

Yes, that is correct.  You can remove or attach external and internal batteries while the unit is live.
