An exception has been raised that is likely due to a transient failure. If you are connecting to a SQL Azure database consider using SqlAzureExecutionStrategy.
The underlying provider failed on Open.

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
No process is on the other end of the pipe

Hi Michael, did you follow the steps in the install guide to add service dependencies? You can modify the service behaviour to be linked to SQL and set recovery states to have the service attempt an auto restart. It’s worth having SmartConnector set to delayed start too if it’s not already.

Hi Michael,
Is this behavior reproducible?
It looks as though the Smart Connector service tried to start up before SQL finished starting.

Hi Jeff,
Not yet. Following another shut down and restart it didn't happen.
I will let you know If it happens again.
