As per IEC standards 60947 the Circuit Breaker is defined as mechanical switching device, capable of making, carrying and breaking currents under normal circuit conditions and also making, carrying for a specified time and breaking currents under specified abnormal circuit conditions such as those of short circuit.

It has either Thermal magnetic release or Microprocessor based release system to take care of Protection functions.

Hello M_Duca,

I'll try to get suitable information and explanations to you.
I got some very usefull web links and sites which give you a very wide and broad explanation.

As of now, I don't know your current electrical expertise.

So at first I would give you this website;

https://www.directenergyprotects.com/learning-center/electric/circuit-breaker-101#:~:text=How%20Do%2....

The site below also gives a good explanation (Base source of Schneider Electric itself);

https://www.wincogen.com/knowledge-base/how-do-circuit-breakers-work/

You can also watch a very informative inside look into a circuitbreaker when it trips in the following first part of an YT series;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cq55tbLtnlg

There is a whole range of different circuit breakers out there.
So if you need any more help or information, don't be shy to ask or contact.

Kind regards,

Rick

Hello,

If you want to go more on detail, you can read Technical Folder made by our old Expert on the past

files (schneider-electric.com)

I would advise you to read the ECT150 about MCCB and international standard IEC 60 947-2
