Transformers in photovoltaic plants

Hello,

I'm having some doubts about transformers in case of photovoltaic plants. Hope someone with photovoltaic experience can pitch in.

1. Are step up transformers needed to be used in photovoltaic plants? Or are classical step down transformers just as good ?
2. What are the differences between step up and step down transformers?
3. In no production state, that is from sundown to sunrise, are no load losses significant and needed to be accountable for?
4. In case of 10 MW plant, is it better to use 5 transformers of 2000 or 4 transformers of 2500?
5. Are harmonics affecting? Third one?

Please include in discussion and write your own thoughts or maybe cases of projects and studies.

I can extend my question also for battery storage. In case of large batteries for example 2MWh, is a step down transformer prefered solution?
