MGE 7000 - 66123 NMC Communication Lost Alarm

Hi All,

I have MGE 7000 UPSs using the 66123 NMC. I have configured the network settings on the NMC and I can log onto the NMV via Web Browser. However when I discover the UPS into DCE (v8.1.0), the UPS discovers and instantly gives a communication lost alarm. I cannot view the UPS Sensors or model on DCE. The Device Credentials and Community names are all correct. The MGE UPS DDF is installed on DCE.

What could be the cause for this and possible resolutions?

Thank you in advance.

Hi @Tafadzwa,

From my experience MGE UPSs usually integrate with DCE via ModbusTCP.  I believe that the DDF for Modbus integration would be either 'MGE Galaxy EPS6/7/8k' or 'MGE Galaxy UPS'.

The SNMP DDF with the name that you provided is polling certain information from the device and is expecting the information from certain OIDS.  To get an SNMPwalk for comparison with the below OIDS: https://community.se.com/t5/DCE-FAQ/How-to-create-a-device-walk-file-for-Data-Center-Expert/ta-p/446...

Compare the below OIDs with the SNMPwalk to determine if these are valid OIDs that the device is responding to.  If the device does not have the following OIDs, then likely a Modbus integration is needed for the UPS.

  • Identifier: .1.3.6.1.4.1.705.1.1.2.0  (This OID must exist in a response from the device to use the MGE UPS DDF)

If the identifier does exist, check to see if the following OIDs get a response as well:

  • model: .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0
  • serial number: .1.3.6.1.4.1.705.1.1.7.0
  • UPS Battery Status: .1.3.6.1.4.1.705.1.5.1.0
  • Battery Voltage: .1.3.6.1.4.1.705.1.5.5.0

If the device responds to the values and gives back a value the issue can be investigated further by technical support.

Regards,

Cory

Hi @Cory_McDonald

Thank you for your reply.

I discovered the UPS using ModBus and it still shows the same Loss of Communication Alarm.

When I try to upload the MODBUS DDF, I am getting an Incorrect File Type Error, I later picked up I cannot upload any MODBUS DDFs for different Devices.

Is there something I need to look at that could be causing this?

Thank you.

Hi @Tafadzwa,

When uploading Modbus DDFs ensure to use the following option within DCE: Device Menu > Modbus Device Communication Settings > Device Definition Files.  The files located on https://ddf.ecostruxureit.com should be able to be uploaded into that screen regardless of DCE version.  If you experience issues with this, I highly recommend reaching out to technical support as that is not usual behavior.

What Modbus DDF were you selecting from the list when discovering?  If the correct entry isn't selected the registers being polled will not align and the device will go immediately into lost communication after attempting the Modbus Discovery.

How did the results of the SNMPwalk go and checking it against the information I previously provided?

Regards,

Cory

Hi @Cory_McDonald

Thank you for your feedback and assistance. I am working on a remote Project with a Partner. We had a call and I managed to upload the DDF File however the Modbus DDF File is already pre-installed on DCE.

We Discovered the MGE Galaxy 7000 UPS using the DDF MGE Galaxy EPS6/7/8k but the issue of "Communication Lost" still persists.

I did not get the chance to compare the OIDs you provided me with the SNMPwalk File however I have asked the partner on Site to do so and revert with feedback.

I'm aware the NMC 66123 has no replacement however is there any other NMC that can be used on the Galaxy 7000?

Hi @Tafadzwa,

I am unsure about what NMCs would be supported inside of that unit, but you should be able to contact your local technical support / sales to check into that for you.

Were you able to work with your customer to solve the communication lost with the unit?

Kind Regards,

Cory

Hi @Cory_McDonald ,

We opted to go for a different network card, still waiting to receive the shipment.

Will advise after installation if the recommended replacement works perfectly.

Regards,

Tafadzwa.
