What does "object orientation" mean and what are its benefits?

Object orientation refers to the holistic view of automation components or functions. A component (e.g. an engine or an entire air conditioning system) is represented as a software object that combines several of its technological aspects: control logic, visual representation, process connection (I / O), documentation and others. Such an object is essentially independent of hardware and can therefore be reused without restrictions. The object type instance model has the advantage that a change to the object type is automatically passed on to all instances of this type if desired.

The main benefits are:

• Engineering efficiency - building applications bottom-up with well-structured object libraries results in a highly efficient engineering process
• Higher quality - the use of proven-in-use objects results in much higher quality - with quicker testing and reduced time spent on bug-fixing
• And a as result a much quicker time to market.
