when does a UPS shut off if there are multiple PCNS clients?

Let's say I have two physical servers plugged into a Smart-UPS with a NMC. Both servers have PCNS installed and configured to shut down the UPS after performing a graceful shutdown (in v4.2 Shutdown Settings -> UPS Shutdown: Turn off the UPS).

However, both servers have different shutdown periods: server A takes 3 minutes to shutdown, and server B takes 10 minutes to shut down. In this case, if the UPS starts to shutdown after given the instruction by server A, then server B is in for a real bad time.

What regulates this? How can I make sure that all servers are gracefully shutdown before the UPS does?

Hi,

Sorry Smart-UPS 2200 is generic. We manufacture SMT2200, SUA2200, and SMX2200. Each model is unique and will react in a specific manor. You will find the exact model number on the bar code sticker on the back of the UPS.

To answer the basic question, you need to configure the NMC to provide power / not shutdown until the system with the longest shutdown cycle has completed. Lets say your Smart-UPS 2200 is an SUA2200. You need to set the low battery duration and or maximum required delay to be a minimum of 2 minutes greater than the needed shutdown delay. The diagram below from the PCNS User's Guide show the process.

So, if you configured PCNS to start a shutdown after the UPS has been on battery for 5 minutes once that delay has been met the OS will be commanded down and a signal will be sent to the NMC commanding the UPS down. At that time the UPS will wait the amount of time set in low battery duration or the maximum required delay which ever is greater. Then wait an additional 2 minute and finally wait and configured shutdown delay and then power will be cut to the outlets.

If your Smart-UPS 2200 is a SMT or SMX then the shutdown delay is based on the outlet groups delay.

The shutdown process is discussed in detail in the PCNS User's Guide starting on page 40 of the PDF.

Hi,

What is the model of the UPS? Depending on the model the power off is based on the outlet groups or low battery / maximum required delay. It is not based on the amount of time the OS takes. You have to enter the proper time again depending on the model UPS.
