configuring email alerting through SNMP traps

This was originally posted on APC forums on 11/11/2008

I'm working on connecting two SmartUPS 1000 and configuring them to notify us in the event of powerissues. Unfortunately, I cannot get email or pager notifications to go through because SMTP authentication is required to send mail within my company. Mail is hosted external and so all email traffic must authenticate to go through.

I don't believe that the hosting provider will make any changes, and since there is no way to setup authentication through the PowerChute software, I'm kind of stuck. I proposed setting up an SMTP or sendmail server , but my director doesn't want one internal to the company.

I called APC support and they recommended setting up an SNMP server and have that server authenticate through SMTP to send email. Has anyone done this and can they point me in the right direction?

I've configured SNMP on the server that I'm using as the APC Server, but I understand I also need to setup an SNMP server with the APC MIB, and I'm completely in the dark about that. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

So you're using SNMP to have a trap from the APC device sent to some type of NMS, which is then in turn going to send the email?

SNMP from an APC device cannot authenticate any type of email, nor even send email, it's SNMP.

To me, it doesn't seem like the combination of SNMP and an SMTP server that requires authentication is going to work, unless your NMS can authenticate.

At this time, the firmware does not allow for coding of authentication to send email from the Network device.

I don't know what happened, but my message got truncated.
