This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/5/2013

Hi!

I havea Linux serverina Smart-UPS (SUA1000BR).

I installedandconfigured successfully the Agentv9.1.0-614 soif the power failsfor 3 minutesis giventoshutdowntheserver:

Events / Actions/Power failed/
Commandfile execution: Enable

File name😕opt /APC/........./default.sh
Duration: 3 minutes

InitiateShutdown Sequence

I noticed thatwhen the power isrestored after 2 minutes, theshutdownis not automaticallycanceled.

Where to configure the Agent v9.1.0-614 to cancel shutdown if power is restored?

Unfortunately, there is no way to cancel the shutdown once its in progress. The UPS will also be in a "reboot" cycle which needs to complete by turning off (and any PCNS clients) and then turning back on when it sees AC power is back - which in this situation would happen immediately almost since the power failure is no longer in progress.

Hi Priscila,

I agree with Angela. Once a shutdown starts, it must run to completion because attached computers are in the process of shutting down.

In your question, you've stated that shutdown starts after 3 minutes of power failure. You also say that shutdown isn't cancelled if power returns in 2 minutes. Is that 2 minutes from when the power failure began? In that case, the shutdown won't occur unless you have some other condition that starts the shutdown earlier. Or is that 2 minutes after the shutdown started (5 minutes from when the power failure began)?

Hi to all!
Thanks for the responses.

Look what is happening here:
I am simulating a power failure.
Programmed to start the shutdown 3 minutes after the power failure.

Reinstate power after 2 minutes of the failure (missing even 1 minute to start the shutdown) but still after 1 minute, the shutdown is initiated.

Actually I do not want to stop the shutdown but cancel the start of the shutdown.

Grateful for more help.

Priscila.

Priscila,

The way you have the configuration set up now once the power fails the shutdown starts and cannot be cancelled. How it works is, UPS recognizes the power failure and reports that to PCBE.  Since you have configured the event Power Failed to shutdown but have also configured a command file to run with a duration of 3 minutes PCBE start the command file execution and starts a count down for the shutdown. When the 3 minutes elapse the OS shutdown command is initiated even if the power has been restored.

There is no cancel button at this time. I will add it as an enhancement request for future versions.

Okay, so if the power failure lasts longer than 1 minute, the UPS initiates a shutdown despite the fact you've set it to shutdown only after 3 minutes?

Bill suggests that perhaps the 3 minute duration you've set is the "script execution delay" rather than time on battery?

If that's not the case, there's probably another shutdown condition that triggers first. For example, the NMC will start a shutdown if the runtime available (amount of time the UPS can provide power) drops below the "low battery duration". The best way to check this out is to copy the event logs from PCNS and the NMC showing the shutdown. You can attach them as files on the forum.

Priscila,

After re-reading your post I noticed something that does not make sense. You listed the Smart-UPS as SUA1000BR. The SUA1000BR would not use Agent version 9.1.0. It should be using Agent version 9.0.2. So before going forward please verify the exact model of the Smart-UPS and the version of the PowerChute Agent.

Thanks for confirming the version.

Did you install the Server and Console? If you did then to shut the OS down after being on battery for 3 minutes you need double click on the the device in the console Like I have highlighted below

1229_pastedImage_0.png

From there be sure that Show advanced items is check at the bottom of the page.

1230_pastedImage_1.png

Once that is done you should select Server Shutdown - Power Failure

1231_pastedImage_2.png

This is where you can configure the software to shut the system down after being on battery for 3 minutes

If in that 3 minutes the power is restored then the OS will not shutdown.

You should then open the web interface you have been using and deselect shutdown on power failed.

Priscila,

With that OS and a SUA model Smart-UPS your option are

Install the Server and Console on a Windows system and have the Agent running on the Linux system monitored by that system.

Change the shutdown configuration via the web interface to shut the OS down by the Low Battery Signal time or configure Runtime Remaining Threshold (these can be found under Server Shutdown - Shutdown Settings).

Upgrade to a SMT model Smart-UPS.

Bill,

Regrettably inform that after following your directions, I have not found the Power Failure parameter in version 9.0 of PowerChute Business Edition available for you.
From what I observed the Power Failure parameter (under Server Shutdown - Shutdown Settings) is only available in version 9.1.

As the agent 9.1 does not work on Linux, I think it will not be able to manage the UPS as need.

Always used with complete success, the UPC UPS Daemon Linux (apcupsd) to manage APC UPS, but now there is a incompatibility protocol of
with the new APC UPSs (a new communication protocol called "Microlink") with apcupsd. So my interest  PowerChute ....

Unfortunately I can not have new APC products on my Linux servers.

Thanks to all!

Best Regards,
Priscila

Priscila,

Did you click on Show Advanced Items? When you select show advanced items the setting you are looking for will be available for your SUA model Smart-UPS. BTW,  SUA model Smart-UPS are not Microlink they are UPSlink. If you are using a Microlink Smart-UPS then you should install PowerChute Business Edition 9.1 and use the web interface. You can then adjust the setting you would like through that.
