UPS IP Change - How to Run Config Utility in VMWare for PCNS

This question was originally posted by Stephen on APC forums on 4/29/2011

How the heck do I make an IP address change on a VMWare server console version of PCNS? XWindows (X11) is required in Linux, but X11 isn't an option in the VMWare console... Even if it was, these are blades and I really don't want to plug the dongle and a monitor into every blade... Can I take the m11.cfg file to a Windows server running PCNS and change it there and copy it back. Can the m11.cfg, if the same for all servers, be copied to all servers? Instructions don't talk aout that and I can find no mention on the forums. Tnx!

I saw that one. It talks about every OS except VMWare's console. I know it's Linux based however Xwindows is not included as an option in the VMWare console, which takes me back to my original question, how do I edit the M11.cfg when an Xwindows interface is not available? Can I temporarily copy the VMWare server's m11.cfg to a linux or windows server, run up the utility to fix the IP address, and then copy it back to the VMWare server?

Hi SteveWellings, in order to change that setting you would have to run the PCNS config utility (further instructions can be found here http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/651/~/launching-the-powerchute-network-shutdown-config...). You should onlky have to do this for the host OS as this is where your PCNS client should be installed. Hope this helps.

Hi SteveWellings, you should be able to copy the file, run the config utility and then copy it back to your VM box (although I can't 100% percent confirm as we have not tried it ourselves). As long as the same version is being used for PCNS (in your case i would assume it is 2.2.4). It would be better if the box you are running the config utility on was a linux box, but from what I am told in theory a windows box should work as well. Besides your scenario, the only other option would be to full uninstall and then reinstall the PCNS client on your VMWare machine. Hope this helps.
