Smart-UPS VT 30KVA - Power Module Total Failure

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/8/2009

Hi All,

My company has a Smart-UPS VT 30KVA with XR battery enclosure, which is nearly fully populated with packs. The unit is just over three years old, and has never been loaded to more than 60%

The unit has been in operation without fault in a datacentre environment (with controlled temperature and humidity) for it's entire life. Every 2 weeks it runs a self-test, which has always passed.

A few days ago it seems the power module completely failed. It went into soft bypass, the display went blank, and the remote management card stopped responding. No extraneous power conditions or environmental factors were recorded by our monitoring equipment at the time of the failure.

Fortunately it did not drop the load, and we have now bypassed the UPS completely.

Now the UPS will not power up at all - when given power (via the maintenance panel) is does not respond at all (no lights, no noise, no sign of life of any kind).

This has generally been (remotely) diagnosed by APC tech support as a failure of the power module which, it seems, is almost as expensive to replace as the cost of the entire UPS system.

Does anybody have any experience of this failure? Are there any other options - for instance, can the power module be diagnosed and repaired rather than being totally replaced?

Any advice you can offer would be gratefully received. It seems to me that a system like this, when used in basically ideal conditions, should not suffer a total failure after just 3 years.

Here we are:

The APC tech that you previously spoke with was accurate in deducing that the power module is the most probable point of failure and needs to be replaced. The PM could be failed for any number of reasons (PSU fault, etc.) - but any failed component in the PM requires the entire PM be replaced (the VT has very few modular parts). The symptom of the UPS being dark, but not dropping the load, is an indication that the static switch still functions, and is not indicative of a catastrophic UPS failure. However, the PM is the most major component of the UPS as it contains logic, inverters, etc.

The easiest test is to reseat the PM with the UPS is completely bypassed. After reseating, does the UPS startup? If not, a site visit may be in order, or simply replace the PM. Unfortunately, without access to controller logs, NMC logs, etc we can't tell what has caused the PM to fail.

Edit: I would just call into our three-phase tech support team @ 1-800-800-4272 and determine a resolution.

Thanks for responding. I did actually try re-seating the power module - I've also done a basic visual inspection of it to look for loose wires, blown components, and the like - but no joy.

One additional question springs to mind - the power module in our UPS is part number OG-SUVTPM30KH. This UPS is a UK one, set to 400v. Does anyone know if the power modules are identical in different regional variants? For example, it seems the US region version of the power module has the same part number. Do the internal electronics adjust to different input voltages, or do I need to specifically get a UK power module?

Thanks

You would need to contact Europe/EMEA support for the correct power module. The North American model PM is 208v.
