Smart-UPS VT 30 kVA Runtime Calibration

Model: Smart-UPS VT 30 kVA
Serial Number: PS0553342248
Firmware Revision: 909.0808.D
Manufacture Date: 12/29/05

We're getting shortened runtimes, so it's probably time to replace the batteries, but I have a few questions if anyone cares to help.

1. The console says we should get 54 minutes of runtime, but we're only getting 24 minutes before it shuts down. I have done runtime calibration, and it runs for 20 minutes or so, but the time displayed doesn't change. Isn't that what runtime calibration is supposed to do?

2. What is the recommended battery replacement cycle? I was surprised that I couldn't find that in the documentation.

3. When the batteries start getting weak and need to be replaced, shouldn't the diagnostics detect that? We run the diags on a schedule but they have not shown anything wrong.

4. I'm thinking these kinds of symptoms might be related to firmware bugs. Where can I get updated firmware for the unit? We fell out of maintenance a while back, so I can't go that route.

Thanks for any advice!

-Mark

Good day,

The average life for most of UPS battery is somewhere 3 to 5 years, depending on: battery characteristics, transfers to batteries, environment, battery manufacturer.
I strongly suggest you to go see the closest APC representative or one of their parteners.
If you care about your load do not take chances to change them by somebody else. Also, the APC tech could upgrade your firmware IF neccessary. There are also settings to be changed when you replace batteries in your UPS systems.

Regards,

Mihail

Run time calibration take effect when batteries still in good condition, if you have at least one battery weak you will not get an exact run time.
make sure that in run time calibration the load is resistive and stable and below 20 % of ups capacity.
the diagnostics detect if there is a totally defected battery or the rack voltage drops below the minimum value for shutdown.
replaced batteries with original one.and don't change the firmware at least if you are sure that the upgrade will solve those problems.
