Smart-UPS SRT 8000 - Alarm Bypass Not In Range : High Voltage

This was originally posted on APC forums on 12/30/2015

We just installed this unit next to a SRT 10000 we have.  I am getting the critical Alarm Bypass not in range ; high voltage

When I powered it up on the UPS console screen I had a choice of 208 or 240vac input voltage.  I chose 208.

It appears that the actual input voltage is 240 according to the UPS Status screen in the Management Card.

This UPS is feeding 2 step down transformers to 120vac.  No load is on the UPS at this time.

The last time the alarm shows in the log it occurred 6 days ago.  Is there a special way to clear the alarms?

Thank you,

Jim R

Hi Jim,

Since you have 240 input voltage the reason you were getting bypass not in range was because you had 240 in and 208 out. The unit was warning you that if it needed to go to bypass it would not because it did not want to provide a voltage of 240 when you were outputting 208 to your load. After changing the output to 240 volts that alarm should clear as the input matches the output (sounds like it did clear).

One thing to be aware of though is that since we are outputting 240 volts now the output of your transformer will not be 120 volts as expected. The transformer is not an isolation transformer and is a fixed ratio designed to work with 208volts input. Since it now has 240 volts input, the actual output of the transformer will be about 138 volts. Please make sure your equipment would be able to handle this before connecting it. The math is below.

208volts in/120volts out = 1.733333
240 volts in/1.733333=238volts out

Jim,

It is useful to know why you are using the transformers.

Here is the fix for my situation-

In the Network Management app go to Control> Outlet Group Control.

Select all of the groups and select the action Off Immediately

Go to Configuration? Power Settings

Change the Rated Output voltage to 240 VAC  (make sure that in the status for the UPS the actual input is also 240)

Select Apply

Turn on all of the Outlet Groups

Alarm is cleared.

Chris,

The output of the UPS is 208/240 and the step down transformers connected to it provides the 110vac needed for my servers etc...

APC Step-Down Transformer 2U Rackmount 208V Input, 120V 24A Output, (12) 5-20R Outlets APC Part Number APC9626
