Smart-UPS RT 5000VA XLI 230VAC

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/10/2016

Hello,

I have stored an working APC Smart-UPS RT 5000VA XLI 230VAC for 9 months, and now want to get it back working.

And I'm now getting A/D Converter Fault, the RED X flashes, and 3 battery LEDs are ON.

In the webpage I've got a reading of more than 455VAC, with the 230VAC powered or not...

The batteries are 2 years old, I think they need to be replaced, but I've never got this kind of error (A/D FAULT).

If I place a new batteries it should work? I do not want to spend some money and then trash the unit...

Is there a way to test the unit without new batteries?

I've got this warnings:

Critical Events - UPS: A battery bus soft start fault exists.

Critical Events - UPS: An analog-to-digital (A/D) converter fault exists.

Critical Events - UPS: Bypass not in range ; high voltage.

Critical Events - UPS: The output power is turned off.

Informational Events - UPS: A DC bus overvoltage no longer exists.

Thanks!

Hi Julio,

I am sorry to hear that. It does seems that the fault resides with the unit at this point. We do offer a trade-ups program where you can get a 15-25% discount on a new unit. Please let me know if you have any other questions that I can help you out with.

Hi Julio,

I believe that your issue would be batteries. Storing the unit for 9 months will cause the batteries to go bad. The unit will not turn on with bad batteries. Many times bad batteries are the cause of the faults you are seeing. One thing you can do to see if the batteries are indeed bad is to test the voltage we are getting from the battery modules. You would measure the DC voltage at the anderson connector for each unit. Each module will measure about 110 volts when fully charged. If they are below roughly 85 volts the batteries would be considered unrecoverable and dead. Now if the batteries do come back as bad I would recommend replacing them but there is still a chance that these faults lie with the unit.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for your answer.

I have charged the batteries with a DC power supply, and I do not think they are good, even they measure 12,7V.

When charged I've raised the voltage to 16V and they charge at 0,3A, at this voltage it's supposed to drain more than 1A...

They start at 1A but in less than 1 minute it drops to 0,3A or less, and I can hear bubbling inside...

While one or two still keep 13,5V with 1A.

So the batteries are no good for sure.

My only issue is if the unit it's good if I change the batteries...

I'm afraid of spending money on new batteries to trash the unit and new batteries...

Thanks.

I have changed the batteries and I have the same problem...

The UPS starts with 3 battery leds and X red led lit.

Then after 5 seconds it seams to restart, and I hear some relays switching...
