Smart-UPS RT 5000 User authentication problem

This was originally posted on APC forums on 5/9/2014

Hi

I have to reconfigure a number of these UPS's and although I reset them to the default apc username and password I seem to be unable to log on with the new credentials I supply for the administrator. At the moment I am unable to sign in via the console, web or ssh.

How do I create a username and password for all three these access types?

Thanks

Karl

Ok. Its working now, but only after I reset the network management module to factory defaults. Thanks for the assistance.

Hi Karl,

I'll need to know what UPS Network Management Card model you're using in that UPS - it should say it on the rear of the UPS. I suspect either AP9619 or AP9631. If AP9631, I need to know what firmware which when you access it via web, is it a blue/white screen or green and white and that will tell me.

I also want to double check to make sure I understand the question. Do you need to reset the user name and password to gain access? Or are you looking to understand how to mass configure devices with a new user name and password?

Hi Angela

Thanks for the quick response. I inherited a number of these UPS's and as usual nothing was documented. As such I need to reset the admin password and essentially be able to gain ssh, web and console access. The web screen is blue and white and model number of that card is: AP9619

Thanks

Karl

I managed to find the user manual for the AP9619 at: http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/PMAR-8KRDZG/PMAR-8KRDZG_R0_EN.pdf

but I followed the procedure to reset the administrator password and I am still unable to get in with the changed credentials.

Let's start at the beginning. You're getting the user name and password prompt via serial connection, correct? So you know your terminal session is set up properly. Then what you should be doing is pressing the pinhole reset button once and in response to that, the status LED (the one with the checkmark or X next to it) will almost immediately begin flashing rapidly green and orange (amber). Right when that happens, you need to press the status LED a second time and the status LED should go off. As soon as that happens, you need to go back to the terminal session you had and press enter once every several seconds until the username prompt comes back. You have a 30 second window here to log in with apc/apc temporarily before it resets back to the unknown credentials. Then, you need to go into the System->User Manager Menu and reset the administrator username and password to something you know or else when you log out of the session or it times out from inactivity, it will go back to the unknown credentials.

Can you let me know how far you made it and what you saw? I suspect either a step was missed or performed incorrectly or the reset button is missing, physically damaged, or was not pressed if the object you used was too large or mis-aligned.

Thanks!

I have done exactly what you said above. Pressed rest twice and managed to log in with apc/apc. Then went to User manager and changed the administrator username and password. Committed the changes and logged out (serial connection). immediately after that I am unable to connect using the new admin username and password. To test that the changes have taken effect I immediately do the reset thing again and log on with apc/apc for the second time. I then go to user manager and can see that the admin username has indeed changed. So, at this stage i'm starting to think something is faulty, since it clearly registered that I reset the username and password. I don't know what to do next and I really need to be able to monitor these ups's via snmp soon!

well, another option is if you're able to get in with apc/apc, then you could go to System->Tools and Reset to Defaults and wipe the entire card if you're OK to wipe all existing settings.

The only thing I can see as an issue would be something like CAPS lock or Num lock causing a problem with the password your setting. I don't think anything is "faulty" based on my experience rather than the perception it isn't working because of CAPS lock, Num Lock, or even something going on with special characters where it is not accepting those but not clearly telling you. Are you using special characters? And perhaps you've already ruled out CAPS lock or Num lock being an issue..

Can you try to set the username and password back to just apc/apc for testing after it lets you in with that after saving?

Ok. Let me try that. If apc/apc does not work i'll wipe the card by going to defaults.
