Smart RT SURT1000XLI UPS battery configuration ?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/10/2015

I  own  Smart RT SURT1000XLI UPS. It supports additional  external  batteries.

Last batteries I used without additional battery pack died relatively fast.

Is it possible that UPS is configured wrong and it kills batteries thinking they are with bigger capacity (external pack added)?

I will buy new batteries, BUT I fear that if configured improperly they will die fast too.

Hi Dave,

Yes, it is feasible that the frequent battery self tests multiple times a day could shorten the life a little bit on the batteries. I believe on this model you could use PowerChute Business Edition to disable the UPS self test which then you'd need to do it manually periodically to make sure you know when the batteries need replacing.

UPSs are designed to stay on all the time and this model is not really intended for home/office use and rather a server room where the noise is likely not as noticeable.

Let me know if you have further questions.

There really is no user configuration related to batteries that could cause this type of issue. The only thing you can do is maybe run too many self tests/battery calibrations. There is no user adjustment for charge voltage or similar.

If battery life is a problem, you'd want to make sure the UPS/battery environment is properly cooled and ventilated. Also consider the battery and UPS usage - do you have frequent outages for example? Lastly, when you have battery failures, especially with aging batteries (versus an isolated module failure early in life), it is recommended that you replace ALL of the batteries in the system. Mixing old and new batteries is not good and the old batteries can damage the good/new batteries on the battery bus.

Thank you very much for the ultra fast response.

I do not make battery tests, but turn off and on UPS every day and sometimes twice a day ...

Is it possible that on every turn on battery test is done and battery life is shortened?

The problem is that UPS is with 2 very loud fans which do work all the time and there is no way to stop noise when I do not use my computer than to shut it off completely.
