SUA1000UXI and 42AH battery

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/1/2016

Hello

I had both batteries connected to my SUA1000UXI die within 6 months. The battery manufacturer (EXIDE) claims that the UPS may not be providing sufficient current to the battery. I have had this UPS for about 5 years now so i was planning to replace it. Does this model support 42AH battery?

Thanks

I'll recommend you to get this Online Smart UPS of APC, cost wise its almost same as your current smart UPS model.

SRC1KUXI http://www.apc.com/products/configure/index.cfm?base_sku=SRC1KUXI&totalwatts=800

And for the external battery type either use 2 x 26AH or if need more backup get the 2 x 65AH SMF battery and set the charger current to 8A (a rotary switch there on back side which can be used to set charger current values either 2A, 4A, 8A, 12A using a flat head screwdriver).

APC also have inbuilt battery version of it called SRC1KI-IN which uses 3 x 9AH battery. For 25% load you'll get around 1 hr backup.

Hi,

This information is from the User's Guide.

Third party battery solution
Batteries must be sealed lead-acid type. Use 40 A, 58 VDC fuses with an interrupt rating of >20,000 A.
The UPS internal battery chargers are optimized only for SMF type batteries.
The internal battery chargers operate in a constant current/constant voltage charging mode.
The UPS is intended for use with 24 VDC nominal battery voltage.

The batteries i was using were SMF batteries and there is a DC fuse as well.

I have two specific questions :

1. Can i use 42Ah SMF battery with SUA1000UXI?

2. What is the maximum battery charging current for this UPS?

Thanks

I read the manual of it http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/JGNY-8P39GG/JGNY-8P39GG_R0_EN.pdf and sadly it doesn't telling how to configure the external battery charging current value. Though it is saying max 15A supported it doesn't telling how to do it also no specific current values like 2A, 4A, 6A etc not gave so its uncertain if you can adjust to suitable value. For a 42AH SMF battery, 6A charger current is preferred though 4A also will work but might overload the charger so not recommended.

Usually for external battery models using two batteries in series the default current value is 4A (for 26AH battery) which I think the unit also providing and with 4A charging 42A is not recommended and that might be the possible reason. If your UPS is working then get get the 26AH battery instead. If need more backup time to use 42AH one find a UPS which can provide exactly 6A charger current. Anything below or above will not be compatible with 42AH battery.
