SU3000RMT2U - Unresponsive - Failed firmware upgrade

I have an SU3000RMT2U with a failed firmware upgrade.  When attempting to upgrade the firmware via the management card, the LCD displayed the "Firmware upgrade in progress" message.  I left it alone for over 24 hours at which point it was still displaying the message and the management card had no connection with the UPS.

I removed power (including battery disconnection) and it is now unresponsive.  The LCD is backlit but displays nothing and does not respond to any buttons on the front.  In addition, the serial port on the UPS is unresponsive.

Any thoughts or have I bricked this thing?

Shoot.  I was afraid of that.  I suppose it's my fault for not being more careful.  Time to go shopping for a new unit 🙂  I wonder what the going rate is for a bricked year-old 2200 on ebay...

Hi Eric,

I'd review this post and see if my or David's suggestion works -> http://forums.apc.com/spaces/5/smart-ups-symmetra-lx-rm/forums/general/72/smart-ups-3000va-lcd-rm-2u...

Angela,

I reviewed the post and tried the suggestions but it didn't work.  Specifically, here is what I tried:

  • Connected the UPS to the serial port
  • Disconnected all devices from the UPS
  • Disconnected the UPS from utility power, disconnected the batteries, and pressed the power button for ~10 seconds
  • Removed the NMC from the UPS
  • Reconnected the battery and connected to utility power - this is where the UPS gives a blank screen on the LCD
  • Attempted to run the firmware upgrade Wizard - however it could not communicate with the UPS
    • I attempted this a second time and opened up a "serial port spy" window to review the RX/TX on the serial port
    • I could see the FW upgrade wizard sending commands but nothing was being received
  • Loaded up a terminal window to see if I could start a firmware transfer but that failed - again, nothing received in the terminal window
  • I also loaded up a serial port spy window and restarted the UPS to see if anything was displayed through the serial port and nothing received.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Eric,

You connected @ 9600 baud rate, right? 9600, 8 data bits, parity non, stop bits 1, no flow control are the full port settings - I imagine so if you saw the wizard talking.

You don't happen to have any idea what the firmware was prior to the upgrade, do you? I learned today some of the earlier versions would fail an upgrade and only retry on the serial port so I'd say we'll likely have to focus on seeing if we can get the serial port upgrade working.

Last question - do you mind sharing where in the US you are?

Hi Angela, I was on 09.1 prior to attempting the upgrade.  I did try the settings you mentioned and also tried at 2400 baud.  I'm in Denver, Colorado.

Hi Eric,

I did some checking to make sure there was nothing else we could try - if you are not seeing any characters over the RJ-45 serial port connection at any of the port speeds (2400 or 9600), the UPS is likely bricked unfortunately and the bootloader isn't working to accept a file. frown If you were able to get that far, it would've been just like that post I linked to you and you could've sent the file over XMODEM and likely recovered.
