SMX3000RMHV2UNC - An inverter fault exists.

This question was originally posted by Colin on APC forums on 8/8/2016

My SMX3000 UPS has suddenly reported "an inverter fault exists". The panel shows a red LED. The outputs are turned off. The fan is no longer running.

The NMC events log reports are as follows:

Date      Time      User      Event

08.08.2016           15:53:07               Device  UPS: The output power is turned off.

08.08.2016           15:53:06               Device  UPS: The power for switched outlet group 3, Outlet Group 3, is now turned off.

08.08.2016           15:53:06               Device  UPS: The power for switched outlet group 2, Outlet Group 2, is now turned off.

08.08.2016           15:53:06               Device  UPS: The power for switched outlet group 1, Outlet Group 1, is now turned off.

08.08.2016           15:53:05               Device  UPS: Switched outlet group 3, Outlet Group 3, has been commanded to turn on, sequenced.

08.08.2016           15:53:05               Device  UPS: Switched outlet group 1, Outlet Group 1, has been commanded to turn on, sequenced.

08.08.2016           15:52:53               Device  UPS: The output power is turned off.

08.08.2016           15:52:53               Device  UPS: The power for switched outlet group 3, Outlet Group 3, is now turned off.

08.08.2016           15:52:53               Device  UPS: The power for switched outlet group 2, Outlet Group 2, is now turned off.

08.08.2016           15:52:53               Device  UPS: The power for switched outlet group 1, Outlet Group 1, is now turned off.

The UPS "about" information is as follows:

Model                                Smart-UPS X 3000

SKU                                  SMX3000RMHV2UNC

Serial Number                    IS1309004233

Firmware Revision               UPS 06.8 (ID23)

Manufacture Date                27.02.2013

Apparent Power Rating         3000  VA

Real Power Rating               2700  W

Internal Battery SKU           APCRBC117

External Battery SKU           APCRBC118

Attempting to reset the UPS by powering off the input feed, removing all batteries, re-installing the batteries and re-applying input power gives the same result - the fan runs briefly, then the UPS shuts down reporting an inverter fault.

Is there anything I can usefully check or reset ?

Cheers, Colin.

Hello Colin,

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your APC unit. Based on your description and the logs you pasted, it looks like there is an inverter fault. That being said, it looks like you completed the "braindead" process, by removing all power sources and load to reset the internal processor. The fact that this did not clear it means, that it is probably not a false positive and the UPS should be replaced asap. After putting the serial number in our system, it looks like it is right around the cusp of being out of factory warranty. I would advise calling into Technical Support at 800 800 4272 and explain to them the fault and what you have done.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here or ask technical support.

Thanks,

Shanon
