SMT1000 fan and firmware

This was originally posted on APC forums on 7/22/2020

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone knows the latest firmware available for the SMT1000 and whether it fixes the continuously running fan issue.  I have heard rumors of a fabled 9.x firmware for this device but have not been able to find it on the APC website.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Mark -

The lastest firmware available would be dependent on your device ID. You can find this under the "about" menu on your LCD.

The firmware Upgrade wizard will update your unit to whatever is the latest revision available for your specific device ID:

https://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/index?page=content&id=FA281865

There have been several updates to fan behaviors, but in most instances your fans will be running, just at the slow speed.

Thanks

Liam

Liam,

Thanks for the reply.

There is no "device ID" in the about menu---only the following:

  • Model:  Smart-UPS 1000
  • Part No:  SMT1000
  • Serial No: AS1040230498

The Firmware versions are:

  • UPS 07.1
  • MCU 05.0
  • UBL 7.20
  • MBL 05.0

When I ran the firmware update wizard (4.2.0) the only firmware that came with it was the one that is currently installed (7.1).

The reason I am asking is because I have had several of these SMT1000s for some time.  Unfortunately, these have all met various fates over the years and I am down to the last one.  However, this one unit is the only one that has a fan that runs all of the time when not using the battery or charging the battery.

Regards,

Mark

Ahh, yes thats a very old unit. Unfortunately 7.1 is the last firmware release for that unit. Given its age, it is possible that a temperature sensor is out of calibration and that is why the fan is running all the time. There isn't much that can be done unfortunately.

Indeed, it is old.  Got the bulk of them in the end of 2010 and beginning 2011.  All of them did very well (much better than the SMC1000-2U units that are giving me fits in the server room).  I just wish I hadn't replaced the batteries last month---before I noticed the fan problem.

Well, I did find a use for the UPS.  We had a bunch of power outages the past few weeks and my secretary mentioned that whenever the Xerox Colorqube printer loses power it dumps a bunch of the $olid ink into the waste tray.  Seems appropriate to have a loud UPS next to a loud printer.

For all of the other Xerox Colorqube owners out there, you need a big UPS for them.  Don't go by the power consumption fiction in the product safety data sheets.  During the warm-up cycle (e.g. coming out of power saver mode and fires-up the heaters to melt the solid ink) the peak power is much higher than the stated "active" power consumption.  This is not a short-duration spike.  Rather it maintains a high load for the better part of a minute.  I have a 8580DN and it stabilizes at around 625W during this time occasionally spiking at 825W).

In our situation, the UPS only needs to hold power until the backup power generator starts (typically less than 30 seconds), so the SMT1000 seems an ideal fit.

Mark,

I just bought a new SMT1000 off somebody that is brand new never used but it does not seem to have a fan installed in the back. Your units had fans in the backside? Please advise just so i can confirm if that is an issue or something i need to install in my unit if at all possible.

Hi Liam, I get a 404 error when trying to access this FA.  Can you please provide the correct link?

Thank you!

No, It has the receptacles, card slot, power cord, etc. on the backside.  Holes for the fan are on either side.

Ah ok. Thanks for the clarification. I am just trying to see if I am able to install a fan in that spot like the SMT has on it just for heat concerns. Do you think that would be possible?
