SC-1500s last only three years?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 4/28/2010

We have two SC-1500s, installed at the same time three or four years ago.

The "replace battery" warning activated on one of them. We replaced the battery, and we get a "battery disconnected" warning.

Before we could solve that problem, the "replace battery" warning activated on the other UPS. This time we had our supplier install the new battery. Again, now we get a "battery disconnected" warning.

We've tried letting them charge - with the alarms sounding - for several days.

The supplier is telling us that both UPSs are broken, and they want to sell us new ones.

Is this normal? One battery, three years, and then you must replace the UPS?

Those units should work fine. The problem is the power that the UPS outputs when on battery - the SC models output a step-approximated sine wave and the SMT units produce a pure sine wave. So as long as they are sized properly, they should work just fine.

got it in a nutshell my friend. SC1500i will not run ML350 prioliant servers..

will kill them. APC do not recommend running the particular model on the SC1500I ever, also a knowledge base article floating around.

I suspect you would have had load issues, perhaps when bouncing back from automated batt tests or mains fail.

Recommend upgrading to SUA1500I.

Both UPSs powered a Proliant ML350 each. (One with HP branding and the other older one with Compaq branding.)

I've unplugged both UPS's, and left them plugged in with and without a load for days, both turned on and off.

Thanks

Did you try a pull plug test at all to see if the unit actually functions when it's supposed to be running on battery?

Thanks!

I couldn't find a knowledge base article on the APC site, but I found several forum threads on the HP site once I knew what to look for.

The vendor wants us to replace them with the SMT750, SMT1000 or SMT1500. I can't find any information to tell me whether this will give us the same problem as the SC models.

Any comments?

Thanks again.
