PowerChute Personal Run as Administrator (UAC) Workaround

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/16/2011

I figure I'll help some others out that I have seen post a question in response to PowerChute Personal edition requiring you to press Yes on log in to run the program as Administrator because of Windows UAC. This will allow you, if you have administrator rights on the account, to not have to do that anymore. These instructions are for Windows 7.

1) Remove the PowerChute shortcut that is added to your Start Menu->All Programs->Startup

2) Goto Start Menu->Run (bottom left, default text displays "Search programs and files" and type Task Scheduler and hit Enter.

3) On the right side of the Task Scheduler window is a frame called Actions. Click on "Create Basic Task..."

4) For a "Name" I just use APC PowerChute then click Next

5) For the Task Trigger change it to "When I log on" then click Next

6) For the Action select "Start a program" and click Next

7) For the Program/Script enter: "C:\Program Files (x86)\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\Display.exe" UNLESS you have it installed somewhere else, then enter the other path you installed it to. Now click Next.

8) For the Summary screen check the box near the bottom that states "Open the Properties dialog for this task when I click Finish" then click Finish.

9) When the properties window for that task you just created pops up, at the bottom of the screen is a checkbox that states "Run with highest privileges". Check that.

10) There's also a "Configure For" dropdown box in the bottom right of the properties window, I select "Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2" from the list. Now click Ok.

11) Rejoice (hopefully), as you'll never have to see the UAC window when you log in ever again.

h1. this is now fixed!

PCPE version 3.0.0.1 is now available on the web. This is an interim release that is available in English & German and addresses three major concerns.

Fixes in this release:*

•With Windows UAC enabled, when a user logged on to Windows Vista or Windows 7, the UAC dialog always asked the user to approve starting the PowerChute Systray icon. This will no longer happen.

•After un-installing PowerChute, hibernation was not being restored and has been corrected.

• When selecting PowerChute Technical data screen it would be displayed very slowly and sometimes the internal PC fan made a lot of noise (indicating over usage). This has also been addressed.

Here is the link to the software or you can browse to it on apc.com/tools/download
