Power Chute Personal 3.0.0 Won't Open

This was originally posted on APC forums on 5/12/2011

Windows 7, SP1, 64bit. Had PCP 2.2 installed and downloaded version 3. Install show "upgrade" which I selected and the install completed. When I tried to open PCP got a stopped working error. Uninstalled using the Windows uninstaller and reinstalled which completed without issue. Still get the stopped working error with the following details:

Description:

Problem signature:

How can I fix the problem?

What happened? I pasted in the problem signature but it doesn't show. Event name is CLR20r3.

Thanks winna. I had perused that thread but it's pretty old (2008) and I couldn't find anything definitive in it.

Hi Redfoodog, what type of UPS are you connected to the win 7 box and what type of cable are you using as well (cable part number would be helpful here). A couple of quick things to check are 1 java (make sure it's up to date or download the latest version), 2 make sure no the APC software or services are running during the install of the software. Hope this helps.

there is another thread on this topic here. unfortunately, there may be many variables on each system that could lead to a conflict and cause the program to crash. not sure if you may just want to try 2.2 again.

Hi R2. I'm using a Back UPS ES550 and a standard USB cable to connect to the PC. I'm getting ready to upgrade my PC to a new Sandy Bridge setup (waiting for the UPS truck to arrive today) and decided to go with a new ES550 and relegate the current one to another computer. Checking APC site and that's when I noticed the new version of Power Chute Personal. The 2.2 version I had installed was working ok but figured I should update with new hardware. Don't know why pasting the error details into the post didn't work. I'll try again here: Pasting didn't work so I put it in manually:

Description:
Stopped working

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: CLR20r3

Update: Just finished hooking up the new Back UPS ES550 with the new data cable Power Chute still won't open.

When I first booted up I didn't have the data cable hooked up and a message popped up that no UPS device was attached so that indicated the program must be functioning at some level. Then I plugged in the data cable and got messages that drivers were being installed and that driver install was successful. There is an icon in the sys tray and hovering the mouse pointer on it shows message: "APC PowerChute Personal Edition - battery backup charging" (I did charge the battery overnight before hooking it up here). Right clicking on the icon brings up a menu but nothing will open because PCP 3.0.0 won't open. Something must be functioning because it recognizes the UPS as being attached and charging.

Actions so far:
1. Downloaded PCP 3.0.0 and installed over 2.2 using the upgrade option.
2. Unplugged data cable and plugged it back in.
3. Uninstalled PCP 3.0.0 using Windows uninstall.
4. Reinstalled PCP 3.0.0.
5. Shut everything down and hooked up new Back UPS ES550 and rebooted without data cable hooked up.
6. Hooked up data cable and drivers installed and Windows recognizes a UPS as being attached.
7. Power Chute still won't open.

just a thought if i were working on my own system..is it possible to either boot into safe mode or just stop every other program from loading and try to load PCPE by itself to see if you have something else installed that is clashing with PCPE in some manner?

Well heck! This muddies up the water a bit. Took the older ES550 and hooked it up on my other computer (also running Win7 SP1). Downloaded PCP 3, installed it and it works without problems. Now I've got to try to figure out what's on this machine that's buggering up the works.

I thought the program was going to run ok but it started messing up my video card/screen display. My desktop gadgets turned into a bunch of squiggly lines and another anomoly ran across the entire width of the screen. Removing PCPE stopped the problem.

I have used nothing but APC UPS's for many years now and I'm really disappointed in the new PCPE. Is it being fixed?

unfortunately, these appear to be isolated issues as far as i know. if you want to post some of your specific system info in addition to what you did, i can forward it along. in addition, if you don't want to post it publicly, you can open a ticket with tech support.

i personally have not heard of PCPE causing so many issues like this. i have seen the "stopped working" thing before but that is about it.
