PCPE shuts off UPS power after restart...

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/24/2009

Hello,

I just purchased a Back-UPS ES BE750G with PowerChute Personal Edition 2.2. Whenever the system restarts after a controlled hibernation, the UPS cuts the power to the computer as soon the desktop appears again. If I remove the data cable when the computer has gone into controlled hibernation, the UPS remains functional after powering the computer back on... once I plug the data cable back in, the power is cut. Bottom line, makes the UPS pretty much useless since it just defers the power cut.

Here are the steps:
1) Computer is powered on, I'm logged in.
2) Pull plug on UPS... countdown begins to hibernation.
3) PCPE puts the computer into hibernation.
4) Plug UPS back in.
4.5) Wait a random amount of time... the UPS keeps beeping even after 180 seconds.
5) Bring computer out of hibernation.
6) Enter my password on the login screen (I have option set to require password after hibernation).
7) Once desktop is displayed, power is cut (unless data cable between UPS and PC has been removed).

Any ideas before I return the product?

Thanks,
Joel

hi

here is what the timeline should look like for when the UPS is shutting a computer down:

1. UPS goes to battery and PCPE starts its preserve battery power counter.

2. When the counter expires it sends a command to the UPS to start counting its turn off delay and then commands the OS to shutdown.

3. The operating system shuts down and the UPS continues to count its turn off delay. (Once the UPS finishes counting its turn off delay it will reboot and nothing can stop this from happening.)

4. The UPS cuts power to the outlets [*AKA reboots - so that the PC will turn back on*] then rechecks to see if the incoming power is acceptable. If it is not it waits there until power returns.

5. If the UPS went to battery due to a brown out the unit at this point will be in LVSM until the voltage becomes acceptable again.

Having just installed PCPE on Win7 for my XS 1500, is there any way to prevent the UPS from powering down completely after the computer shuts down? It's hard to believe that everyone wants to lose power completely (to every receptacle on the UPS) once the computer hibernates! I want the UPS to continue to power the outlets even after the computer shuts down. I have a cable modem, router, telephones, etc. that can be powered easily for 2 hours once the computer shuts down. I'd like those to continue to be powered which means the UPS needs to stay ON even after the computer hibernates. Any way to accomplish this? Is there a setting somewhere? If not, I'll have to just uninstall PCPE and go back to the native Win7 power scheduling.

Thanks,
Mike
