Low runtime on UPS Smart-UPS 3000 RM XL

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/31/2017

We have 2 Smart-UPS 3000 RM XL nobreaks purchased in the year 2011 whose batteries have been replaced but the runtime between them is very different.

Nobreak #1 was changed to battery in November 2016 and nobreak #2 was changed to battery in February 2016. We did the calibration procedure as indicated, but the runtime still remains very different.

Note that in the nobreak that has been changed the battery most recently has the lowest runtime.

Any suggestions on how to proceed.

Hi Emerson,

Click on the Shutdown option for "UPS on battery" event and check on the box of "Enable Shutdown", now set the delay for the shutdown. It takes in seconds so you need to convert minutes to seconds and add it. Ex: to set the server to shutdown after 5 minutes of power outage I would multiply by 60 and set the delay as 300 seconds.

Hi Emerson,

The issue is likely due to the very small load attached to the UPS. In order for a calibration to perform meaningful results, the attached load should be greater than 30%. I would increase the load attached to the UPS to get the units up over 30%, then run the calibration again. It will still be difficult for the unit to display truly accurate runtimes when you reduce the load back to normal, but they will be much closer.

Thanks for the feedback

Yes, when we did the calibration we used a 30% load.

The load currently displayed is what is actually being used in the nobreaks. Each nobreak has a server connected to it of the same model as well.

About your only option at this point would be to try an additional calibration (with 30+% load).

The batteries installed in your units have been in service long enough at this point that they have some wear & tear on them. If the batteries were brand new we could try a force reset of the constants in the UPS. Doing that at this point would cause the UPS to over estimate the runtime available which would result in some unexpected behavior.

Ok Liam I got it.

Since I had already done the calibration, I will leave it the way it is.

Another doubt, in this nobreak I'm using the APC9630 card and installed PCNS on the server I want to manage. How do I configure shutdown?

Today it looks like this:
