IP Config not saving to Network Management Card

This was originally posted on APC forums on 12/30/2008

I'm trying to configure the IP settings on my APC AP9617 UPS Network Management Card, using the APC Device IP Configuration Wizard. After a period of searching, it provides a form to put in IP / subnet / gateway. I enter 192.168.1.173 / 255.255.255.0 / 192.168.1.1 respectively. The MAC address it shows matches the one I have installed in my UPS.

When I click finish I get a pop-up message:

APC Device IP Configuration Wizard
Your default Web browser will be started.
Enter in the following at login:
User Name: apc
Password: apc

It then tries to open the IP in my browser, but that times out.
I get 'Request timed out' when I ping the IP.
When I restart the Device IP Configuration Wizard, I get the same pop-up as if it were an unconfigured device.
I have tried using a different IP address.

Does this sound like a hardware problem, or can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

There is no serial connection on the front of my Network Management Card.

The method that uses ARP did not work. I got no reply from the pings with 113-byte packets.

hi,

it sounds like you are doing everything correctly according to this procedure:

1. From the Start menu, launch the Wizard. The Wizard automatically detects the first Network Management Card that is not configured.
2. Select Remotely (over the network), and click Next >.
3. Enter the TCP/IP settings (System IP, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway) for the unconfigured Network Management Card identified by the MAC address at the top of the screen. Then click Next >.
4. On the Transmit Current Settings Remotely screen, if you checkmark Start a Web browser when finished, the default Web browser connects to the device that contains the Network Management Card
after you transmit the card’s settings.
5. Click Finish to transmit the TCP/IP settings. If the IP address you entered is in use on the network, the Wizard prompts you to enter an IP address that is not in use. Enter a correct IP address, and click Finish.
6. The Wizard searches for another installed or embedded but unconfigured Network Management Card. If it finds one, it displays the screen with data entry boxes for the TCP/IP settings of that card.
bq. – To skip configuring the card whose MAC address is currently displayed, click Cancel. \\ – To configure the TCP/IP settings of the next card, repeat this procedure beginning at step 4.
for some reason, if its not working, i'd try some of the other methods mentioned [here in this article|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3061]. Directly connecting via the serial port on the device you are working with is recommended since it is the most reliable way.

overall, i think you are doing everything correctly so i am not sure why its failing but it will be less of a headache probably to try it a different way if you can

you would need to use the serial connection on the back of the ups, assuming its a smart-ups. For symmetra's they have a serial port on the symmetra com card in the back of the unit as well. If it is a 3 ph ups, there should be a serial port on the front of the unit, just be aware you need to disconnect the powerview display from it first. Also if it is a 3 ph ups you can configure the ip manually through the power view display. If you need assistance please post the model of the ups your using.

It is a Smart-UPS.

I was able to connect to and configure the IP information via a serial cable. An interesting note, though... when trying to reset the login and password, I had to plug a network cable into the card in order to get the recover-from-a-lost-password reset to work (where you have to press reset and then reset again during blinking amber/green lights). Without being plugged into the network, the reset would only blink once each: left amber, double amber, right green, both off.
