BackupUPS RS 1500 on Windows Server 2003

I used APC's website to recommend a trade-in for a SU1400 on a Windows Server. They recommended the BackupUPS RS 1500. Now I find it only works with PowerChute Personal Edition which won't run on a server OS. What gives??

I downloaded and installed PowerChute Business Edition 8.01, which recognized the Back UPS 1500 during installation, but now that it's installed I see "Device Communications Not Established".

There are many features of Business Edition which I would love to have, but more than anything I would like this UPS to work!!! I only need the software to be able to shutdown the computer safely in the event of an extended power outage, and I only need to manage this one UPS on this one Windows SBS 2003 Server.

Any suggestions??? Thanks for your help!

Andrew,

You may want to contact Microsoft for help but be aware they have announced end of support for Windows Server 2003 beginning 14 July 2015. If native does not / is not work you can look at APCUPSD. It supports Windows Server 2003 including 64 bit, has a binary /.exe installer, and support comm Over USB.

Shannon,

The Back UPS RS 1500 is a simple signaling UPS, where as the Smart UPS uses Smart Signaling for the advanced monitoring purpose. The Power Chute Business Edition will not communicate with the Back UPS through the USB cable.

The PCBE will have limited options even if it communicates with it via the appropriate cable because it is the simple signaling UPS. You may configure the USB native support to shutdown your Server gracefully in the event of power failure. You would need to uninstall the Power Chute software in order for the Windows USB native support to enable.

Please make use of the below K-base document instructions to configure the USB native support after uninstalling the Power Chute software from your server.
http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2497

I hope that it helps.

Looking for a way to configure the native UPS support in Windows 2003 Server but am having problems with the slider bars for low and critical battery level alarms.  They always jump to 100%, regardless of what I try to set them to.

UPS is Back-UPS XS 1300

Also, the low battery alarm triggers immediately that the UPS goes onto battery - which makes the UPS controls simply useless.

Anyone able to suggest how to:

a)   configure Windows 2003 server to have realistic low and critical battery alarm levels?

b)   use APC software to allow UPS to be used properly.

BTW - the link in the thread above does not work.

Thanks,

A
