APC Smart UPS 2200 Problems

Hi Guys,

i´m glad that i´ve found this forum cause of the trouble i´ve since yesterday about my ups.

I own an old rack mountable Smart UPS 2200. I bought it second hand 9 months ago, this hole time it has worked well.

But yesterday the ups stopped working. I don´t know exactly how it happened cause the ups is installed in the basement of my house.

The small peace of information i could give you to help me find out about the problem is:

- the ups seams not to have power or not won´t to power up (it´s not possible to get any reaction out oft the ups, not the On Button or the Resetbutton on the backside could help)

- no LED´s are glowing

cause of this i opened the ups, to take a look for some burned out components and to check the battery pack.

- some of the batterys are deformed, an they have only a small charge in it (3 V)

- all other components looks well to me, i just could make out the battery pack as a problem.

My questions:

- is the ups dead, or are just the batterys the problem ? (i don´t want to buy a new battery pack for a dead ups xD)

- is it possible to power up the ups without a new battery pack inside, so i could be sure that it is still working ?

Thanks

Hi.  I have a tower version of the SU2200 and was unable to get it to turn on without a functional battery installed and I think your rack mount version functions that way as well.  You can always try to get it going without the batteries.

It sounds as though the batteries overheated due to excessive charging by the UPS causing the deformation.  The batteries for the SU2200 are not cheap and I suspect there are issues with the charging circuitry within the UPS that would have to be dealt with to make the SU2200 work over the long haul.

Unless you are a tinkerer at heart, know how to repair electronics and are on a mission to get this particular UPS back on line, I'd suggest investing in a current generation model and save yourself a headache or two as I have encountered along the way keeping my "obsession" running.

Good luck!
