APC SUA3000RM2U dead...?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 11/6/2014

Dear Forum,

I have an APC SUA3000RM2U, which is obviously older, and has been sitting on a shelf for a few years but was pulled from a working environment.   Upon applying power to the device it exhibits absolutely no reaction whatsoever - not a single light comes on, no clicks or sounds, nothing - it's like I've plugged a rock into the power outlet.  I've checked everything I can think of, pressed all the buttons, flipped the breaker on the back, etc. to no avail.  I've also let it sit on power for 24 hours.

Should this device exhibit *some* reaction to being powered?  I don't want to buy a battery pack for it until I'm sure that will fix the problem I'm perceiving.  And if I'm missing something simple, like a fuse I didn't notice, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help,

J.

Typically, SUA units do not require the battery to turn on. Though, if there is no DC voltage present anywhere in the system, you may need batteries to jump start it.

Was the battery in this system stored connected or disconnected? Can you measure the voltage on the existing battery pack?

It was stored connected and I'm certain it is completely drained.

From my experience, I do think it is worth a try to "jumpstart" it with new batteries, preferably if you're able to return the batteries if the UPS does happen to be the issue. I can't be sure which it is since the batteries are likely completely shot due to being stored connected and not periodically recharged.

I may try to jury-rig a 48v source and jump-start it with that first...  at $260+, the battery pack is a big risk.

OK - it worked.  I stacked 5 9v batteries and used a pair of test leads to energize the input connector from the battery pack.  Ping, on it came.  Thank you very much - it's dinging "Replace Battery" even with the old pack connected, so I'm going to order a new battery pack.

Thanks again!
