AP9630 Firmware Upgrade Failure

This was originally posted on APC forums on 12/30/2012

Hi All,

I have 2 APC Smart-UPS 3000VA RM with AP9630 management cards. I can't get either card to upgrade using the Windows tools, FTP or SCP. Each attempt fails. Here is their current >about

apc>about
E000: Success
Hardware Factory
---------------
Model Number: AP9630
Serial Number: BA0908004529
Hardware Revision: 05
Manufacture Date: 02/17/2009
MAC Address: 00 C0 B7 D7 B1 10
Management Uptime: 0 Days 0 Hours 2 Minutes

Application Module
---------------
Name: sumx
Version: v5.0.0
Date: Nov 25 2008
Time: 14:55:35

APC OS(AOS)
---------------
Name: aos
Version: v5.0.1
Date: Nov 25 2008
Time: 12:09:34

APC Boot Monitor
---------------
Name: bootmon
Version: v1.0.0
Date: Oct 8 2008
Time: 16:03:02

I'm trying to install 5.1.7 from the APC web site, apc_hw05_aos517_sumx517_bootmon102.exe but it just won't work.

The Windows tools gives me this...

Starting Upgrade 12/31/12: 11:13:50
-----------------
12/31/12: 11:13:50 192.168.2.141: Testing device connection
12/31/12: 11:13:50 192.168.2.141: Device connection passed
12/31/12: 11:13:51 192.168.2.141: Testing FTP Log-in
12/31/12: 11:13:54 192.168.2.141: FTP Log-in passed
12/31/12: 11:13:55 192.168.2.141: Saving data file
12/31/12: 11:15:10 192.168.2.141: Information --> Unable to verify previous version

Anyone got any ideas?

Unless you absolutely need this tonight for some reason, I'd suggest waiting for one of the APC folks here to answer.

On the AP9617/8/9 you can do manual FTP's to the unit and "put" the new AOS file to it. It should reboot and then you FTP to it and "put" the APP file to it. The only reasons I'm urging caution are: A) you can "brick" the unit doing this if you don't get everything exactly right (like sending the wrong file for the hardware) and B) I haven't tried it on an AP9630/9631 and thus don't know if you're supposed to also send the bootmon file (or in what sequence).

Again, I'd urge you to wait for an APC reply unless you have to get it done tonight and understand the risks I've outlined above.
