MV Substation Ventilation Design
When designing a substation one of the most important factors to take into account is the heat generated by equipment and how to mitigate the effects of this on your equipment.
It is therefore critically important that the ventilation within the substation is optimal as some studies have proven that excessive ventilation can drastically increase condensation. Ventilation should therefore be kept to the minimum level required. Furthermore, ventilation should never generate sudden temperature variations that can cause the dew point to be reached.
For this reason, natural ventilation should be used whenever possible. If forced ventilation is necessary, the fans should operate continuously to avoid temperature fluctuations.
Attached to this topic is Schneider Electric's Medium Voltage Technical Guide and Recommendation for MV Installations.
In the Medium Voltage Technical Guide Ventilation is discussed in general and some examples with calculations are shown. See pages 41-44.
In the Recommendations for MV Installations the sizing of louvres is discussed in further detail. See page 10.
The cut-out below is one of the examples shown in the documents.
