Video: Deploying the Data Center Expert Virtual Appliance on Hyper-V

We have the VMware version of StruxureWare in production currently.  Because of the the craziness of VMware prices, we want to switch to the Hyper-V version of StructureWare.  Is this easy to do, and will the license transfer?  Also can we migrate all of the settings from our current StruxureWare under VMware over to  a new Hyper-V EcoStruxureware so we don't have to set it all up again?  Thanks for the help!  🙂

Hello @sryerse,

To migrate between hypervisors (for example, Hyper-V to VMware or vice versa), the general approach is pretty straightforward:

1. Deploy a trial version of the same DCE version you’re currently running onto the new hypervisor.
2. Once the new VM is up, work with support to resolve licensing and transfer your subscription to the new instance.
3. After licensing is sorted, simply restore a backup from your original system onto the new one.

For migrations between DCE systems (whether physical or virtual), there are a couple of important things to keep in mind:

• The new system must be configured locally via the console before restoring a backup.
• Settings established during the console setup are unique to that system and are not included in backups, so they need to be defined separately.

Once you restore your backup and licensing is in place, all of your existing configuration—such as devices, device groups, notifications, backup server connections, users, and user groups—will be available on the newly deployed DCE system.

We haven’t tried doing this yet and it will take a couple of weeks to work thru it since it is essentially building a new server.  It does seem like it should work although the licensing might be tricky.  Thanks for asking!  😊
