DCE 8.3 from OVA. Restore from Backup that was done the same day states it's not compatible

I was on DCE 8.3 and did a full backup. I did not have the apcsetup apcreset and apcinfo passwords so I was told I had to install version 8.3 from an OVA. Mac address is the same, ip address is the same, usernames aren't of course since I was using ldap for authentication and was relying on the restore to configure that. I tried to do a restore from the full backup just done it stated it's not compatible and fails. What to do next to get all the information back? I'm trying to eventually get to 9.1.1.

Please request support for help with your DCE backup and updating the software to the latest version.
