WorkPlace Tech 5.11 shows “Invalid Project” errors when projects are stored in OneDrive

Issue

When using WorkPlace Tech (WPT) 5.11, projects stored in a OneDrive‑synchronized directory may fail to compile or rebuild. Users encounter messages such as:
  • The selected operation requires that the application is in a project and the project is opened.

  • The application you are trying to rebuild must be in a project, and the project must be opened.

Product Line

Environment

  • WorkPlace Tech 5.11
  • Windows 11 (systems affected when using OneDrive-based project paths)

Cause

A timing conflict introduced by a recent OneDrive update affects WorkPlace Tech’s ability to reliably access project files. When the project resides in a OneDrive‑synchronized directory, file locks and sync delays can cause WPT to incorrectly interpret that the project is not open or is invalid during compile or rebuild operations.

Resolution

Use a local directory for WorkPlace Tech project storage. The recommended workaround steps are:

  1. Create an equivalent local folder path outside of OneDrive (for example: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\WPT Documents\My Projects).
  2. Move or copy the project files from the OneDrive directory into this new local folder.
  3. In WorkPlace Tech, update the Project Path in Tool Options to point to the new local directory.

Note: You may still copy files to OneDrive for backup purposes, but WorkPlace Tech must reference the local path for stable operation.

These steps prevent the timing conflict and restore normal compile/rebuild behavior.
