Cause
There can be confusion regarding how Windows indicates whether features are enabled.
The Security Expert SOAP Service installation documentation shows a checkmark next to the required.NET Framework feature. A checkmark indicates that the feature and all associated sub-features are enabled.
If only some sub-features are enabled, Windows displays the feature with a black square (filled checkbox) instead of a checkmark. This state is often misinterpreted as meaning the feature is fully enabled when it is not.
Windows Feature Indicators
To verify exactly what is enabled, expand the parent feature and inspect the child items individually.
| Indicator | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ☑ Checkmark | Parent feature and all child features enabled |
| ◼ Black square | Partial selection. Some child features enabled, others not |
| ☐ Empty box | Feature disabled |
Resolution
When a feature check box is shown with a checkmark in the documentation:
- Expand the feature in Windows Features.
- Verify that all sub-features under the parent feature are enabled.
- Do not assume that a black square (filled checkbox) indicates the same state as a checkmark.
- Ensure the feature state matches the documented configuration before installing or troubleshooting the SOAP service.
All required sub-features must be enabled for the feature to match the documented configuration.
