smart 1000 ups battery test problem

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/10/2011

Just recently replaced the batteries in this UPS with 12VDC 7Amp batteries (Yuasa - same rating of removed ones) and when the unit is tested the battery bar graph shows full bars for the test. two or three seconds after it finishes the test, the replace battery light will turn on and the unit will beep. If I test it again the unit will pass the test again and nothing else will happen, it will go back to normal operation.

What is causing this problem? The blades on the replacement batteries are smaller, is this causing problems?

i dont know if it is but it is possible that one of the cells in those batteries is faulty. as an APC employee though, we cannot support third party batteries.

the UPS self test essentially compares the voltage drop of the batteries, while operating on battery, to a table stored in its memory to make sure the batteries are operating properly. If this test fails, then you'll see the replace battery LED come on.

other than trying a different batteries, i am not sure what else can be done. i have never seen this happen unless there is an issue with the batteries - faulty or maybe not fully charged? the batteries should be charged for at least 8 hours to ensure they are providing the expected results and runtime. during this time, you could turn the UPS off so that it is not being used or at least refrain from your own self tests.
