separate surge protection between devices

This was originally posted on APC forums on 1/7/2011

I have read about avoiding ground loops that can be caused by plugging devices power lines into separate surge protection from the data line. My flat screen tv and computer are plugged into my UPS. My UPS does not have coax input. Thus, I want to buy an APC surge protector that has coax protection and run my coax cable line thru it before it connects to my tv. Thus, I will have 2 sources of surge protection. I will also run the cable modem and router thru the APC surge protector. Will this cause any problems? Note that the UPS is not APC. If a ground loop does occur, does it affect the protection of my devices or damage them in anyway or just has a chance of causing noise or hums?

Hi James,

Below are some APC Knowledge Base Articles that I hope can help you out:

* [No Signal Passed Through Coax TV/Modem protection|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/912/kw/ground%20loop]
* [Ground Requirements for APC Products|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/326/kw/ground%20loop]
* [Daisy Chaining UPS|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/397/kw/ground%20loop]
If ground loop is present, it can affect the protection of your equipment for if a surge hits you the excess voltage will not properly shunted to the ground.
