I should be able to use my UPS and computer at a remote location using
automotive fuel as the original power source. With a vehicle engine, alternator,
12 volt battery and power inverter I should be able to do this. Who has already
done this and knows what will and will not work. Electricity is invisible to
me, so it becomes a matter of using the right parts (equipment). This get into the question of what kind of
inverter to use: pure sine wave, modified sine wave or square wave. I have both the APC Smart-UPS RT 1500 and the
APC Back-UPS XS 1500. I have both the
Husky 400 watt inverter and the Husky 750 watt inverter. The 750 watt is modified sine wave, but I have
no documentation for the 400 watt inverter.
I have not found a combination that works but I do not want to try all
four possibilities and take the risk of frying a power supply. My effort was with the engine running, so low
voltage input should not be an issue. My
computer draws less than 300 watts. At least
that is what the Back-UPS tells me.
The wattage of the computer should not be an issue other than run time of
the UPS battery. But to date I cannot
get a UPS to recognize the inverter power.
The ultimate question is how do I go from petroleum to 12 volts to inverter
to UPS? Which one of you is smarter than
I am?
