XS 1500 only lasts 4 minutes??

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/3/2009

I have an XS 1500 which is less than a year old. Both Powerchute and the LCD reading shows that the battery is fully charged (100%) and the load is only 12% (~110 watts), but the estimated run time is only 4 minutes? What gives? I checked the battery connection and everything is correctly plugged in.

if you post the first several digits of the serial number, we can check the warranty.

for example: JB0646 would indicate a unit was manufactured in the 46th week of 2006 by looking at that. the first two characters indicate where the unit was made and what it is and the next two indicate the year. the following two indicate the week in that year and the rest is just a production number. anything from 2006 on has a 3 year warranty for a Back UPS and if its an LCD model, it should still be in warranty.

you can reference this thread to support but i am pretty sure that since these are still kind of new, they may need to replace the entire unit if we dont have the batteries available.

did this unit EVER provide the correct amount of runtime??

have you actually tried to run the UPS on battery to see how long it lasts? the estimate of runtime when the unit is online is just that - an estimate. it should read more than 4 minutes of course though.

i would recommend seeing if you can run the UPS on battery to see how much actual runtime you get.

-if you get only 4 minutes actual runtime and then the UPS turns off, it sounds like you may need a new battery.
-if you get the correct amount of runtime, [which you can use this runtime chart for..seems like about 1hr 15 min..|http://www.apc.com/products/runtime_for_extendedruntime.cfm?upsfamily=23], let the unit charge back up overnight and see if the runtime is calculated correctly via the LCD and powerchute. this would be a calibration.

Hold down the Power button until the self-test function starts, or initiate it from PowerChute. Or, you can unplug the UPS from the wall and do a 100-0% drain test, then plug the UPS in to charge. That should calibrate the Battery Time display.

Thanks for the response. I tried as you suggested and it actually lasted less than 4 minutes (about 2) before everything went off...and I made sure to disable the 'hibernate when there is only ... minutes left' option. Looks like I may need a new battery even though it passed the self-test? I'm pretty sure this UPS is only about a year old...anyway to determine if it's still under warranty?
