Use 12V 102A battery instead of 12V 12A battery

This was originally posted on APC forums on 10/6/2012

Hello, is it possible to use a 12V 102A battery on an 1000V APC UPS that normally uses 12V 12A? The other batteries are drained and I currently only have a 12V 102AH battery. Any implications if I connect it to the UPS directly? Or it will work properly?

We don't recommend using 3rd party batteries of course, especially if they are not in spec with ours. I have not personally tried what your suggesting or heard of a customer doing it. If anyone else has any thoughts or experience doing this, feel free to respond.

That 102A battery will certainly power the ups when line voltage is not present. However, I would fear that the charging circuit of the ups would suffer.

If you look at sla batteries, they have a few specs stated.. charging voltage, float voltage, initial current in-rush, and max current when charging (I am paraphrasing the terminology).

I would think that a battery almost 10 times the capacity of the stock battery, would adsorb much more amperage than the ups charging circuit could provide.

I wouldn't use it.

I suspect the only difference you might see is that it would take an enormous amount of time to charge the 102 AH battery pack. The charger inside the UPS would not be able to supply any more current than it was designed to supply when connected to the specified battery packs. On an older SU2200 that I own, I did just that by connecting 4 Optima SLA car batteries and it worked well and supplied standby power for an exceptional amount of time.
