RS 1000 battery backup doesn't last long in Windows

This was originally posted on APC forums on 8/30/2015

I have a wierd problem. My APC unit is quite old and model is RS 1000 (BR-1000IN). It has two battries inside connected in series. After the batteries are fully charged 100% as per windows battery indicator, I restart the PC in BIOS and let it run. It works for 30 minutes or so.

However, the same fully charged batteries, when PC is run in windows, it doesn't work for even 10 minutes. Battery percentage dips very fast and then windows shutsdown gracefully (configured to shutdown at 20% in windows power options). Any idea what the problem is?

I was using APC PowerChute software and it was showing load of ~120W. Assumed, may be the software is causing issue, I uninstalled it and started using Windows native power option, but the problem remains.

I have already tried recalibration, disconnected, re-connected batteries etc, nothing seems to help. These two set of batteries were working great for like 45 minutes when it was newly installed a year ago.

Is load the problem? but then why the same configuration PC worked earlier on these batteries.

Any suggestion help would be appreciated.

Hi,

When the system is running the BIOS it is consuming less power since it is using fewer resources. When running Windows the system will consume more power to provide the needed resources.

If recalibrating the batteries did not resolve the issue you can either replace the batteries or as you mentioned the "unit is quite old” replace the UPS.
