New battery passing test then failing

This was originally posted on APC forums on 10/24/2008

My UPS had a failing battery so I bought a new genuine APC battery and installed it. The first thing I did was run a test and it passed with flying colors, before the test it was still charging and was at about 70% something.

After it passed that test I went ahead and clicked the button in the software indicating that I installed a new battery. I noticed something right off the back, all a sudden the battery was fully charged and the battery time increased. I then re-ran the test and it failed.

Did I screw something up by not letting the battery fully charge before telling the software that I installed a new battery? What to do?

just to confirm - when it failed the self test, was the replace battery LED solid or flashing?

generally, APC recommends charging the battery for 16-24 hours before using it just because if its NOT fully charged, and you experience a power outage, you probably wont get the full amount of runtime. when the UPS does a self test, it compares the voltage drop to what it should be with a healthy battery.

i'd leave it for a day or so, and try it again but you most likely didnt do any permanent damage or anything. also, for some reason if there IS a problem with the battery, APC batteries have a 1 year warranty.

i noticed you are using powerchute personal edition 1.4. if you are interested in upgrading, we are at 2.0.

Does 2.0 support Windows 2003 Server Enterprise?

well, to begin with, powerchute personal edition (any version) doesnt officially support Windows 2003 at all due to shutdown timings with a server operating system. powerchute business edition is supposed to be used with a Smart UPS (versus Back UPS like you are using) because most server class machines with WIndows Server 2xxx usually need a Smart UPS due to the features of a Smart UPS and business edition (which I can go into if you want to know what those are)

But, to answer your question, 2.0 should run no problem on Server 2003 if you have been using 1.4 without a problem in your setup.

I think I had a problem running 2.0 at one point, thats probably why my clients have 2.0 and my server has 1.4. I think I will leave it be. I did let the UPS charge overnight and it passed the self test so I think we are ok. Thanks for your help.
