My Back-UPS XS 900 has become very loud -- almost intolerable

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/22/2008

Hello all. I've had this UPS for about a year now. It has been plugged in and in use continuously since purchase. Starting a day or two ago it has started making two sounds, sometimes in tandem and other times separately:

1) a loud murmur/thrumming (way louder than the passive noise it made when it was acting properly)

2) a whirling... knock. Like an internal fan is on its last leg or something. High pitched mechanical sound.

For the past two days it's been doing these noises. I examined the unit today but the warning on the housing said that there are no serviceable parts inside. So I'm stuck and have no clue what to do. I'm oblivious to the workings/dangers of batteries so I'm about to shut it off in fear for my safety. Not sure if these things explode or what... lol

Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

I thank you for the response. I will call support today. Only issue is that I don't think I saved my receipt, which is odd because I'm notorious for hanging on to paperwork. If I can't get it serviced without a receipt (which I wouldn't blame them for) then I'll probably just dispose of it and go buy a regular power strip. I can't afford a new UPS every year.

Jason,

Tech Support is capable of looking up the warranty based on the serial number, so make sure to have that model and serial number available prior to calling. So long as the serial number code isn't something like JB0603 (Where 06 is year, 03 is week) or older, you shouldn't have a problem getting it replaced.

Jason,

I'm not even going to touch #1, since ultimately, that has no bearing on what I'm going to say about #2.....

With #2 you may be right that a fan is dying, but it sounds more like a bearing on the fan has become loose. Just call tech support. If you've only owned it for a year, they should be able to replace it for you without a problem.

That's not really something we want to keep in the field.
