My APC RS-800 periodically shifts to battery backup and back.

This was originally posted on APC forums on 10/2/2012

On occasion when the power is still on and the unit is firmly plugged into the wall, it will go into battery backup mode briefly and then come back to outlet power. It hisses for a bit, beeps, then promptly goes back to using the main power. Why doesn't it just continue using the main power instead of switching to battery backup periodically?

Also, to any admins who read this, please let someone know that the contact form on the main website is down. It doesn't send the form when you submit it. You get either a blank page or an error saying that there isn't a web application to handle the request.

hello,

i will let someone know about the ask APC contact form. thanks.

also, on your question, to me it sounds normal. sometimes the UPS will see other issues (not necessarily a blackout) that will cause it to switch to back up power temporarily i.e. harmonic distortion or other issues not necessarily obvious to you and i. if it is constant, like every minute, i'd be a little worried. how often do you see it specifically?

if you don't want it to be as sensitive, you can also change the sensitivity option as well. on that model (with the four LEDs on the front), I believe you can turn off the UPS (but leave it connected to the wall) then hold down the power button for 10 seconds until all the LEDs flash and indicate programming mode. then toggle it by pressing it once. 3 flashing LEDs indicates high sensitivity, two for medium, and and one for low.
