When connected to functioning wall power the BX1500LCD (also called 1500 XS ) ups will charge the battery and report estimated runtime. No signal for bad battery. With a constant 60 watt load from an old CRT monitor the UPS reports a long run time.
Pulling the plug from the wall in this configuration causes immediate power down of the UPS without any other indications.
Plugging the ups back in returns it to battery charging, showing load, etc.
What steps should I take to debug? I do not want to buy a bettery unless I'm reasonably certain that the failure is the battery vs. the UPS itself.

Bought new batteries. Unit is working again. Not sure why the bad battery indicator never came on, but glad to have things working again. When I pull the plug now with the BX 1500 LCD under load pc stays up.

with the ups plugged into ac, run a self test. If the batteries are no good, it should report it as such but still keep running. To be safe, have a non-critical load attached.

To initiate self-test mode, press the power
ON/OFF button, and hold it in for ONE second.
The AC plug symbol (ON LINE) flashes off and
on during self-test mode.
When I trigger self test mode, the online icon for AC flashes, then the On Batt indicator flashes then it completes with no problems.
When I pull the power cord from teh AC outlet then the APC UPS shuts down with a chirp every few seconds then stops totally with no chirping.
When I plug the APC UPS back in then power is returned.
Checking the runtime display (under AC power) 234 min estimated run time, 7 watt load.
Double checking the display after the self-test there was no indication of
Online Bad Battery
This warning indicates that you are in ONLINE
mode, and you have a bad battery, indicated by
the flashing bad battery icon.
Any thought on how to tell if this is the battery or the UPS ?
