ES 700 (aka BE700G-GR) LAN (USB?) setup problem

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/6/2011

Hello,

I have recently bought a APC Back-UPC ES 700 (SKU: BE700G-GR, http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BE700G-GR) and have now very basic problem with setup: how do I connect this UPC to my LAN? On the web page with specification it says, that this UPC can be connected to "Network line - 10/100 Base-T Ethernet (RJ-45 connector)". Unfortunately after connecting this UPS to my LAN swith there is no sign of any network activity (Ethernet link is down). I've checked the swith port -- it is working fine with other LAN devices.

I've tried both "Data Port" (top socket) and "DSL / Modem / Network / Fax" (bottom socket) http://www.apc.com/resource/images/salestools/500/Miscellaneous/8FF4E83F070F84928525761F0048C8F7_MMA...
The UPS seems to be working: it charged the battery, beeps on power outage.

I have also considered USB connection, but I don't see USB port on this UPS and the only cable provided with the product is the basic telephony cable (2 wire, with RJ12 plugs)...

OK, it looks like silly problem, but I am stuck right now. Can you give me some hints: how can I connect this UPS to Linux server?

My target configuration: [APC ES700] --> LAN or USB --> [Ubuntu server with apcupsd]. This UPS has been used as example on Ubuntu help pages: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/apcupsd, so I guess this configuration should work 🙂

Brgds,
mapi

Hi there,

just to let you know: I have contacted retailer to ask for the missing cable. I was instructed to provide my claim in written form. I did send them a written claim using their claim for and they have not responded for the last 3 weeks.

Sad.

APC support should be able to send you one then?

Hi Mapi,

The purpose of the Network Port on the UPS is to protect your network data line from surge. Surges can travel thru power line or data line, the network port would not give the UPS network manageability.

As for the data port, there is a proprietary cable that ships with the unit the part number is 940-0127. It is an RJ45 to USB connector, unfortunately APC cannot provide support on how to use apcupsd.

Hello JonPro,

thanks for your answer -- this explanation helps a lot!

You've written that there is "proprietary cable that ships with the unit". I am sure, that my unit was shipped with only telephone cable supplied (1 pair, RJ12 plugs). Do you think that I should have received the 940-0127 with my UPS?

The cable should be included with the package. If your unit is still within warranty feel free to call our local support in your region or send them an e-mail or chat for you to get a new cable if it is missing.

I recently bought a brandnew BE700G-GR here in Germany. I experience exactly the same problem that the USB cable is missing.
The retailer told me the cable has to be bought separately. Im really wondering if this statement is true?! I thought the cable should be included like JonPro said? confused

i checked that SKU in our system and show that BE700G-GR includes a 940-0127E cable, also known as AP9827 RJ-45 to USB data cable on the apc.com website. i believe that you should contact APC support to get one, since it wasn't included.
