DLA1500i Smart-Ups battery/software reset.

This was originally posted on APC forums on 5/4/2010

Hi All.

I have a DLA1500i Smart-Ups 1500, which I cannot fault as it has served me well for the last three years.

My dilemma is that I am having trouble sourcing a new battery for the unit here in Dubai. The APC agent here tells me that it is an ‘old’ model and they are unable to source a genuine replacement battery but he can install a replacement that is commonly used in these ‘older’ models.

My question is this:
As the power chute software is working, I can stop the audio warning alarm telling me that the battery needs replacing. I have reset the date for the battery telling the unit it has a new battery hoping to reset the unit but the red led is still flashing telling me to replace the battery. The unit was purchased new three years ago and this was confirmed by the date of the battery installation information from the power chute software.
As I have one computer running on the unit there is only 7% draw at any one time. I have read that there is a way to ‘reset/fool’ the unit as if there was a new battery installed and to stop the audio alarm and flashing red led.

My question is therefore - HOW IS THIS DONE?
Obviously this is not ideal and a replacement battery is being sought but as a temporary work-around there must be away to reset the unit without replacing the battery. All my indications are that the battery is fine and this is a precautionary alarm indication only.

ANY IDEAS PLEASE.

Supplier Part #:DLA1500I
Supplier Parts Description:UPS 1500VA USB 230V
Product Serial #:AS0752110994
OS: XP
Business Edition Power Chute

Many thanks in advance.
Regards.

Hi.

Thanks for your reply.

As mentioned, I am unable to source an APC battery for this unit here in Dubai. The reseller and service department information was from the official APC web site. If you have information where I can get the correct replacement battery here in the Middle East/Dubai I would be most grateful.

Failing a resolve to this situation, my only alternative is to get rid of the APC equipment and use a different manufacture. It’s unfortunate as I was under the impression that APC was a global company but it looks like I may not be able to have the required service support which I require after all.

Many regards.

I'd first try running a self-test on the unit with a greater load. Ideally you'll want more like a 20-25% load on the UPS to procure accurate self-test results. Since you only have a 7% load, that could be a false alarm, or it could be a legitimate battery issue. Granted, the batteries are expected to last 3-5 years so that may be the case.

The way to "trick" the UPS, like you're saying, isn't a recommended solution so APC isn't likely to provide you instructions on how to do so. I think a couple of people of posted here about it though, so maybe they can point you in the right direction.

If you legitimately need a replacement battery and are having trouble finding one locally... http://www.apc.com/tools/locator/index.cfm
I set the country to United Arab Emirates, left city/zip blank, selected "Miscellaneous Device" and checked the box for a country-wide search. Pulls up a bunch of APC certified partners, most of which are in Dubai.
