Comptuer goes into Hibernation IMMEDIATELY on power failure

This was originally posted on APC forums on 7/27/2009

I was running the latest PowerChute and am now running native Windows Vista power management - I've been having the same issue with both. The UPS I'm using is a Back-UPS RS1500.

The issue I'm having is that when there's a power failure of more than about 5 seconds or so, the computer goes into immediate hibernation. The battery shows as 100% charged and before I removed PowerChute, it was showing 35minutes run-time based on the load. Really brief power failures (on or two seconds) seem to be OK.

Attached are the power management settings where I have the "Hibernate After" settings for battery set for 15 minutes.

Any ideas why the computer is hibernating immediately??

TIA,
bert

The UPS is about 2 or 3 years old - I've tried the self-test and pulling the plug before (this problem has been going on for months now), but not recently. Each time tested, it worked OK, but when a "real" power issue arrises, it goes into hibernation.

I'm only drawing 200 watts (the max on this unit is 865) - even if the battery didn't hold a charge as long as it should, 5 seconds seems a bit short!

Hi Bert,

I'm not seeing anything in the power settings that looks off. How old is the UPS and the battery? If its older then the battery may not be able to support the load as long as it said in PCPE. One way to test would be to connect a static load (or just disconnect the data cable from the UPS) and then pull the plug from the wall and see how long it really supports the computer before crashing. If it only last a few minutes then the computer may be shutting down at the right time.
