Calibrating new battery. Rundown time acceptable?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 7/30/2013

I am trying to recalibrate my UPS with a new battery. (One of the issues I face is - UPS Triggers a PC shutdown within a minute of going to battery. After searching around, i found recalibrating UPS with the new battery should fix at least one of the issues i am facing. Hope the other issues go away with this!)

UPS is RS 1500VA / 230V (865W).

I used a resistive load on the UPS consisting of two bulbs in parallel, 200W + 100W (35% of 865W)

Runtime came to about 16.30 min (+/- 30 secs). As per the chart here, for 300W load estimated time is 19min. So the rundown time came to about 85-90% of the estimated time.

This is about (10-15)% variation. Is this fine? or should I recalibrate it again after a full charge?

Unfortunately, our schematics are proprietary so you would not be able to get them from us. I am not sure if OS native support would have the same problem but that might be worth a try too.

anyone that could help out?

I have tried the battery recalibration process, yet the estimated time on PowerChute is not shown. PC shuts down with a minute.

When you calibrated it, did you leave the USB cable connected? When you do a calibration, you should disconnect everything besides that 30% load that does not fluctuate more than -/+ 5% to ensure accuracy.

Another test I would do is see how long the UPS turns (either before another calibration or as your first step) with no USB cable attached. Maybe do this with a non critical load so your computer does not do a hard shutdown but this will help identify if this is because of the USB connection or if there is an issue with USB runtime.

*EDIT* Maybe I misunderstood - it ran 16 minutes initially with or without the USB cable attached? And now it only runs for one minute with USB attached and doesnt report estimated runtime?

Can you clarify, is the computer gracefully shutting down? I am pretty sure it is because you said its when a shutdown/hibernate command gets executed.

Anyway, can you confirm in PowerChute what you see for settings under Configuration->Runtime please? See below for the screen I am referencing. The behavior you describes makes it sound like it is set to Preserve Battery Power and shutdown the computer when the UPS has been on battery for one minute. You may just need to re-configure the settings on this screen.

I disconnected all cables during calibration. Only resistive load of 300W connected, which gave 16-17 mins.

I let the calibration recharge cycle complete. If I Connect just the USB cable (no load), and withing 1 minute, a shutdown /hibernate event gets fired.

Edit: Once I tried connecting, with PC & USB connected to UPS. Again, the shutdown event got fired in less than one minute. I aborted the shutdown, and the UPS gave me at least 45 minutes.

Yes. Graceful shutdown triggered in one minute.

here are my screen shots.

Until just now, the estimated time wasnt even showing 1 minute.

OK, we had some discussion here. We believe the UPS is at fault here and is not calibrating properly.

Can you try a higher load than the 35% you did and disconnect the USB per what you did previously and try one more calibration to see if it updates the runtime on the UPS?

P.S. can you confirm exact model of the UPS from the white sticker on the back? I am guessing it is BR1500I but just want to make sure. Also, how old is the UPS? (the first several digits of the serial number will tell us if you have that i.e. JB0405XXXXX)

All right. I did a 500W load and runtime came to 8:40 (9.3 min is estimated. Variation of about 1 min or 7%. Variation seems acceptable to me)

Now Letting it charge all night on Zero Load. Will check tomorrow if it has calibrated it right.

I think the beep is indicating low battery state. To me, this is a UPS issue and nothing to do with PowerChute. The UPS is the one that reports the runtime to the software. So, if the calibrations are not working there is no way really beyond what you've been doing to accomplish a calibration for this type of UPS cry - is it still under warranty?

I still have the same problem. I let it recharge for about 18hrs.

I also noticed that, The first couple of times today, when i switched it from AC to battery, it beeped continuously even after I aborted the shutdown.

I reset the UPS power button twice. I switched off for about 20 minutes and the annoying beep is gone. Now it just pops the shutdown button as soon as i switch to battery (It shows shutdown message repeatedly 2-3 times even after i abort it).

Is this a hardware or software issue?

It is just out of warranty.

Where can I get hold of the internal circuit diagrams? I have somebody at home who can look into it.
